On Saturday morning, Sarah prepared for dress rehearsal, then remembered the box of cookies that she’d been left holding last night when Gregory left so quickly. The boys had been so disappointed. Maybe she could talk Gregory into helping deliver them later in the day.

When she arrived at the church, his truck was already there. The boys hopped out as she was parking.

As soon as she opened her door, Hunter and Chase popped into her space.

“We helped Dad make the manger,” Hunter said proudly.

“Yeah,” Chase said.

“What a nice surprise. I can’t wait to see it.” She stood and looked over the top of her car.

Gregory nodded a tentative hello. Then he climbed out of his truck and walked around to open the back. He didn’t speak. Didn’t look at her. He was in self-protect mode. She recognized it from years before.

What’s the deal?

“And we worked on my talking part again last night,” Hunter added with a proud grin. “I can do it by myself!”

“You’ve really worked hard. I’m proud of you.” She ruffled his hair as she watched his dad out of the corner of her eye.

Gregory carried the manger to the front door of the church, but then he had to wait for her to come unlock it.

She loaded her arms and handed off some things to Hunter and Chase to carry. When they reached the door, she handed him the key.

“It looks perfect,” she said about the manger. “Thank you.”

“No problem.”

Without saying another word, he hauled the manger to the front of the church and set it on their makeshift stage. “Is there anything else in the car?”

“Yes, in the backseat.”

He was like a cold wind blowing past as he headed past her and out the door.

She checked on Hunter and Chase, who were driving little Matchbox cars on the carpet. Then she followed him out.

He lifted up a box. “I see you still have the cookies.”

“Yes. I was hoping we could deliver them today after rehearsal.”

“I’m sure Hunter and Chase would love to. You can take them.”

She walked around to the other side of the car and opened the door. She looked at him across the backseat. “But they’ll want you to go, too.”

“They’ll get over it once you’re on the way.”

“What’s wrong, Gregory? Did my dad say something to offend you last night?”

“He’s just worried about you. Seems to think I broke your heart in high school.”

That broken heart flip-flopped in her chest. “Well, you did.”

He raised a brow and looked at her with his piercing blue eyes. “You do remember you dumped me don’t you?”

She put the doll that would play the Baby Jesus in the pageant into a canvas bag. “I remember that I asked you to wait so we could date freely later. But you couldn’t wait and started dating Delia.” Dating. That was putting it politely.

His hand stilled. “Biggest mistake of my life.”

She jerked her gaze to his face. But he continued staring at the stack of items on the seat.

She couldn’t believe he’d just admitted that.
